Culinary Arts, Baking, and Pastry

As Julia Child once said, “No one is born a great cook; one learns by doing.” The Culinary Arts program can help you learn by doing—no matter your prior experience—sharpening your skills and preparing you for a career as a cook, pastry or restaurant chef, baker, or caterer.

At Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), you’ll gain hands-on experience in professional kitchens while learning culinary techniques, baking and pastry skills, and the fundamentals of foodservice operations. Guided by experienced chef instructors, you’ll build practical skills and creativity that can help you succeed in the fast-paced food industry.

Through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world lab experiences, you’ll explore cuisines, baking techniques, and food service management while strengthening teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills that are essential in the fast-paced culinary industry.

Students at any Maricopa Community College may need to complete courses at more than one of our colleges.

Turn your passion for cooking or baking into a rewarding career. EMCC’s Culinary Arts, Baking, and Pastry program blends creativity with technical training to prepare you for work in restaurants, bakeries, hotels, catering operations, and institutional kitchens.

You’ll complete more than 500 hours of hands-on lab training in fully equipped kitchens while learning professional cooking techniques, baking and pastry production, food safety, and foodservice management. Students also gain real-world experience through Regions, the program’s on-campus restaurant, where meals are prepared during the fall and spring semesters.

Courses explore a variety of culinary styles to help you develop a well-rounded foundation, and you’ll also have opportunities to connect with industry professionals through internships, scholarships, and networking opportunities.
